Dear Fellow Members,
On Tuesday, the Grapevine Fire Department called out R561 to provide
rehab services to City personnel shutting down the now infamous house with all the cats near South Main. It was like a scene from a horror story. The bulk of what we did was provide rehab services to Police Department Animal Control officers, who had to wear full protective gear and a respirator and air tank just to go into the house. Lois Kadel and I responded on Tuesday as Team B-1 and were on the scene for approximately 9 hours. We were called back the next day for more of the same, a really tough call given the brutal temperature extremes we were facing. Late yesterday afternoon, the residence was official declared a biohazard and clean up and cat removal was turned over to a professional toxic waste company for disposition. R561 was on scene for 9 hours again. This 18 hour increment represents our largest and longest effort in our organization's history. We blew through supplies at an unprecedented rate. Our R561 Unit proved to be indispensable as our air conditioned patient compartment was used by the PD and Animal Control for meetings, lunch and cooling down personnel. We had always hoped the vehicle could be used in this way and it was most gratifying to see it happen. I would specifically like to thank all the Team Members who responded. Lois Kadel went above and beyond being out there with me all day on Tuesday and all afternoon on Wednesday. Leslie Francis was there most of the day on Tuesday and on Wednesday morning. Bill Bimmerman came to my rescue by doing a late night trip to Wal-Mart on Tuesday night to resupply our stock for the next day and then came out early Wednesday morning to help me set up the scene again. Joy Mayo came out Wednesday morning and Judith Russell joined us for all of Wednesday afternoon. Niel Brieger was there on Tuesday and took pictures, which he'll have up on our webpage soon. It was a Herculean effort by all our folks and both the FD and PD sang our praises. The PD told me as we were shutting down that they literally could not have done it without us. We can all be proud of the showing R561 made for our City and to the many news media crews on site. Please join me in giving a HUGE 'Thank You' to all our members who worked this incredibly difficult and drawn out incident. I thank all responders from the bottom of my heart. Way to go Team Members!!
Regards, Carl
